Cataract is the clouding of the lens, which causes the pupil to appear grayish or whitish.

Causes:

Age: The main cause of cataracts is age, although it varies, it generally occurs after 60 years of age.

Diabetes: In our region, it is the second most common cause of cataracts. The so-called "diabetic cataract" can occur at any age, depending on the onset of diabetes and how well it is managed.

Trauma or eye inflammation: Although less common, these can also cause cataracts.

Congenital: Various abnormalities during pregnancy can cause the newborn to develop cataracts in one or both eyes.

Common symptoms:

• Progressive blurry vision.

Treatment:

The only available treatment for cataracts is surgery.
