Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis

It is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, the membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by infections, allergies, irritants, or even neoplasms.

Types of conjunctivitis:

Viral: Caused by viruses such as adenovirus. It is highly contagious and may be accompanied by symptoms such as fever and sore throat.

Bacterial: Less common, caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. It spreads through contact with contaminated secretions.

Allergic: Triggered by an allergic reaction to substances such as pollen, dust, or pet dander.

Common symptoms:

  • Red eyes.

  • Pain.

  • Tearing.

  • Gritty sensation in the eyes.

  • Yellow or green discharge.

Transmission:

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis spread through contact with contaminated eye secretions. This occurs when an infected person touches objects or surfaces with dirty hands, and then another person touches those surfaces and rubs their eyes.

Allergic conjunctivitis is triggered by airborne allergens.
