Cataract

Cataract is the clouding of the lens, causing the pupil to appear grayish or whitish.

Causes:

Age: The primary cause of cataracts is age, generally occurring after the age of 60.

Diabetes: In our region, it is the second leading cause of cataract. The so-called "diabetic cataract" can occur at any age, depending on the onset of diabetes and its management.


Ocular trauma or inflammation: although less common, can also cause cataracts.

Congenital: various complications during pregnancy can result in the newborn having cataracts in one or both eyes.

Common symptoms:

  • Progressive blurred vision.

  • Glare.

Treatment:

The only available treatment for cataracts is surgery.
