Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis

It is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, the membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by infections, allergies, irritants, or even neoplasms.

Types of conjunctivitis:

Viral: Caused by viruses such as adenovirus. It is highly contagious and can be accompanied by symptoms like fever and sore throat.

Bacterial: Less common, caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. It spreads through contact with contaminated secretions.
Allergic: Triggered by an allergic reaction to substances like pollen, dust, or animal fur.

Common symptoms:

  • Red eyes.

  • Pain.

  • Tearing.

  • Gritty sensation in the eyes.

  • Yellow and green discharge.

Transmission:

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are transmitted through contact with contaminated eye secretions. This occurs when an infected person touches objects or surfaces with dirty hands, and another person then contacts these surfaces and touches their eyes.

Allergic conjunctivitis is triggered by airborne allergens.
