Diabetic Retinopathy



Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease affecting individuals with poorly controlled diabetes. It is a serious complication that can lead to irreversible vision loss or blindness.
Cause:
High blood glucose levels.
Damage to the retinal blood vessels caused by high glucose levels.
Symptoms:
The symptoms vary as diabetic retinopathy progresses, from no symptoms at the start to progressive degrees of vision decline, image distortion, eye bleeding, and ultimately blindness.
Treatment:
Anti-angiogenic injections, laser photocoagulation, vitrectomy surgery.
Regardless of the required treatment, it must be accompanied by strict diabetes control; diet, regular exercise, medications and/or insulin, to achieve a satisfactory outcome.
