Strabismus is defined as the loss of alignment between the eyes.

When eye alignment is not developed during childhood, the eyes may not develop normal vision, and 3D vision may also fail to develop.

There are 3 main types of strabismus:

  1. Convergent strabismus or esotropia: when one eye is turned inward (toward the nose).

  2. Divergent strabismus or exotropia: when one eye is turned outward.

  3. Vertical strabismus: when one eye is turned upward (hypertropia) or downward (hypotropia).

Strabismus may be congenital (present from birth) or acquired after birth.

Its causes are very diverse and may include changes in the strength of the extraocular muscles, poor vision in one or both eyes, high farsightedness (hypermetropia), or paralysis of the eye motor nerves, among others.

If strabismus appears in childhood, it should be corrected as early as possible to help the child develop normal vision in both eyes and proper 3D vision.

Treatment for strabismus, depending on the cause, may include glasses, eye patches, surgery, or a combination of glasses and surgery.
