Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease that affects people with poorly managed diabetes. It is a serious complication that can lead to irreversible vision loss or blindness.


Cause:

  • High blood glucose levels.

  • Damage to the retinal blood vessels caused by elevated glucose levels.


Symtoms:

Symptoms may vary as diabetic retinopathy progresses, ranging from no symptoms at first to progressive stages of vision loss, image distortion, eye bleeding, and eventually blindness.

Treatment:

  • Injections of anti-angiogenic agents, laser photocoagulation, or vitrectomy surgery.

  • Regardless of the treatment used, it should be accompanied by strict diabetes control through diet, regular exercise, medications, and/or insulin to achieve a satisfactory outcome.
